Brian:
Tough luck on the shingles. I had a very minor case as an adolescent and I thought at the time that was quite painful and I can only imagine what it must feel like as a physical adult. Hope it was localized in the mid-section. Bless.

As for the IPL, they have cheerleaders right? Can't be all that bad.

Great article Brian, but there is one intriguing aspect to the IPL series you didn't mention. The TV rights are held by Google, and all matches are streamed live on Youtube.

So jsallison and other deprived cricket fans, watch to your hearts content, thanks to the miracle of theIinterweb thingy.

As a fellow watcher of IPL cricket, I share many of Brian's thoughts, both positive and negative.

I know more than I'll ever need to know about the Madras Rubber Factory - did you know they were the first to bring the blimp into India - and some of the commentators leave a bit to be desired.

I'm more sympathetic than Brian to the Fantasy Cricket aspect of the Deccan Chargers and Delhi Daredevils and the like. As a symbol of a vibrant nation charging forward into the twenty-first century, it reminds me more of early twentieth century America and it's franchised sports teams, than Brits in pubs in the nineteenth century. Which is why I think it might take off in America.

It's also interesting to see Colly starring while the great KP sits on the bench, and the exposure of the young Indian cricketers to the top talent on display is surely good for their cricket.

If India can surmount it's religious and regional problems, there's no reason to suppose that it can't be the next super-power and if I was a young enterpreneur, Mumbai or Delhi or Kolkata might be where I was headed to make my fortune.

Sky also broadcasts GP

I have very limited interest...

and S14 rugby

I have zero interest

which combined with test cricket

Great interest!

and football

Negative interest... I would pay to block that part of the signal even entering my air space :-)

makes the subscription more than worthwhile. But each to his own.

Exactly. I am NOT a "sports fan", I am a cricket fan, which makes this a fairly unattractive proposition really.

For me, Ritchie Benaud remains the supreme commentator, of any sport, although Peter Alliss of golf runs pretty close.

"Mark Calcaveccia gets out the big furniture". Priceless.

Can't agree with you on Boycott though, the man does my head in. It's all very well taking a ballistic approach to opinionating (as it were), but when most of those opinions are just ranting for the sake of ranting, it gets very old inedeed.

As for Twenty20 and the IPL, it's a good laugh, like going down to the local park for a bit of jumpers for goalposts 5-a-side, or just playing rugby league. Test cricket is still the daddy.

The trouble with a Sky Sports subscription if you are not a soccer fan is that Sky Sports is essentially a provision of a lot of soccer matches with other sports programming thrown in to fill up the time when there isn't soccer on. Their cost base consists largely of huge sums of money being paid to the Premier League, UEFA, and a few other bodies for rights, and their business model is to put a big margin on that and sock it to subscribers. If you are a soccer fan, well and good. You get good value. The other sports perhaps add four or five quid to the monthly subscription cost, but you have enough interest that you watch at least some of them with interest.

From a cricketing point of view, you must pay the five quid that is probably fair value for the cricket, and then the extra 30 quid for the soccer. The "I might watch a little bit of that as well" justification for the other sports works less well when the "other sports" are pretty much entirely what you are paying for. Plus, there is a sense that as a cricket fan you are a second class citizen. Soccer gets first call on programming time. Sky chooses to show series based on how easy it is to buy the programming or whether they have empty schedule time rather than whether they think it is what their viewers want. As a cricket fan watching Sky who has very limited interest in football, I feel lots of little niggles and irritations in the product I get, mixed in with the sense that I am being taken advantage of to pay off the Premier League and I am getting poor value for money.

You can't be that keen on test cricket if you think a Sky sports subscription is too much to pay to see it on TV.

I think Sky Sports is great value for football. I played the game as a hobby for as long as I could. Now I watch the professional game at my local premiership club and run a boys team in my spare time. For real enthusiasts Sky is good value. As I'm not rich in either time or money Sky is the only way I can see lots of football. I'm happy to pay Sky for the service and the subscription method means that people who aren't that interested in sport don't need to pay anything which is fine by me.

I can understand why Sky seems expensive for the typical casual football or cricket fan who just wants to keep up with the chat at work or in the pub, but for real fans it is great value. Anyway, highlights programmes like Match of the Day are there for casual fans - paid for by everyone, even people with no interest in sport whatsoever.
