John&#039;s right - Adenauer was a good guy. (disclosure/name drop: my grandfather was press attache for Adenauer--see my blog, Feb 9-- unfortunately, I do not know a lot about my grandfather or his time with Adenauer).
Adenauer, who at one point was sent to a concentration camp, was eventually responsible for bringing Germany into NATO and he was respected for trying to help the Jews in the post-war time.
I think his quote was intended to be ironic.
