Actually, Stalin was the father of photoshop. He would routinely have photos retouched to remove the image of people who had fallen from grace.
He also mastered such techniques as cloning (terrified apparatchiki) and masking (the hellish reality of Soviet life), which later inspired a whole generation of graphics software designers.
